Inspired to heal

A Clarkson College partnership scholarship is helping Maggie Buhr turn her experience into a rewarding career.

As a certified nursing assistant (CNA) working at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Maggie Buhr saw first-hand the life-changing impact physical therapy can have in a patient’s life. The experience inspired Buhr, who had already earned a Bachelor of Science in Community Health and Wellness from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to enroll in the Clarkson College Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program.

“I was initially considering physical therapy school, but decided PTA was my best option,” says Buhr. “It offers me the opportunity to work closely with patients while maintaining autonomy in clinical decision making.”

She says while doing her research, it soon became clear that Clarkson College was the place she needed to be.

“Clarkson College’s clear communication and willingness to answer all my questions made the decision even easier,” says Buhr.

“One of the highlights of my experience has been the close-knit learning environment,” she continues. “With a small cohort, we’ve developed strong relationships and a supportive dynamic. I’ve also appreciated how invested the instructors are, not only in our academic success, but in our well-being as individuals. Their encouragement has made a significant difference in my confidence and growth as a future PTA.”

Today, Buhr works as a CNA at Vetter Senior Living – Brookstone Meadows. Because Vetter Senior Living is a community partner of Clarkson College, Buhr was awarded a partnership scholarship to help her with tuition.

“The partnership scholarship reduced the financial burden of pursuing my education,” says Buhr. “It has allowed me to focus more on my coursework so I can prepare for my clinical experiences. I am so grateful for the opportunity because it has made achieving my education goals more attainable.”

For those considering returning to school, but feeling unsure, Buhr says go for it.

“Although it can be overwhelming at times, the experience promotes both personal and professional growth,” says Buhr. “Staying organized and asking for help when needed are key to success. In the end, the effort is worth it.”
