She signed up as the camp nurse. The rest was all heart.

Sometimes service means stepping into the role you were trained for. Other times, it means simply seeing where help is needed and pitching in. SueAnn Hubbard, Clarkson College RN to BSN student, experienced both recently as a volunteer.

As the camp nurse at Maranatha Camp and Retreat Center in Maxwell, Nebraska, SueAnn provided care for campers throughout the week. She administered medications, provided first aid, assessed sick or injured campers. documented care, and communicated with camp staff and parents – but things at the medical station were quieter than anticipated. SueAnn found other ways to serve, even helping in the dining hall.

One of the most meaningful parts of her experience was working with a group of primarily Spanish-speaking campers and families, using Google Translate to bridge the communication gap. This experience reminded SueAnn that nursing is about more than clinical skills. It is also about finding ways to communicate, helping others feel comfortable, and meeting people where they are.

SueAnn shared, “I have always believed that service is service, regardless of your designated role, and if there is somewhere you can help, you help.”

Her time at camp gave her an opportunity to use her nursing experience in a new setting while returning to the heart of why she became a nurse: to care for others and serve where she is needed.
