From possibility to purpose

Shyanne Vargas found her path at Clarkson College thanks to a generous scholarship and supportive faculty.

Shyanne Vargas celebrates the completion of her Associate of Science in Radiography at the Clarkson College commencement ceremony on Aug. 8 and looks forward to completing her Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging in December.

She knew healthcare was where she wanted to be, but at first wasn't sure which career path was the right fit.

"I originally wanted to go into nursing, but learned about radiology during my research," Vargas says. "It seemed very interesting and offered so many different pathways."

Her research led her to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging program. The online degree prepares students for careers performing X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and mammography, and graduates enjoy a 100% job placement rate.

Vargas works as a recreation aide at the Skip Palrang Memorial Fieldhouse for Boys Town. Because Boys Town is a community partner of Clarkson College, she qualified for a partnership scholarship.

"The scholarship alleviated some of the stress of paying tuition," she says. "I'm grateful to Boys Town for the scholarship, as well as providing flexibility for me to work around my school schedule."

Vargas says both the scholarship and the support she received from Clarkson College have been instrumental in her success. "Clarkson College has not only allowed me to grow professionally, but personally, too," Vargas says. "The work in the classroom and in the clinical areas has helped me gain confidence in myself professionally, which has transferred into my everyday life."

"I knew the smaller class size would allow me to better learn and interact with my classmates and faculty," she continues. "I really enjoyed the faculty and how invested they are in preparing me for my future career."

As part of her education at Clarkson College, Vargas earned her Associate of Science in Radiography and a certificate in Medical Imaging Informatics, a program unique to Clarkson College. She looks forward to the opportunities ahead in this growing and in-demand field.
