Clarkson College Announces Leadership Transition

The Clarkson College Board of Directors has approved a leadership transition plan to uphold the institution’s longstanding reputation and success. Effective Aug. 1, 2016, Dr. Louis Burgher, following a distinguished nine-year career as Clarkson College President, will retire from his position as President and transition to the role of President Emeritus. Following the recommendation of Dr. Burgher, the Clarkson College Board of Directors appointed Vice President of Operations Dr. Tony Damewood to assume the role of President.

“Serving Clarkson College has been one of the most gratifying roles throughout my career; however, I believe it is time to turn over the reins, and we are thankful to have the right person for the job” Burgher said.  In his role as President Emeritus, Burgher will concentrate on larger scale projects, such as legislative issues, acquisition of additional campus space and community relations.

Burgher and the Clarkson College Board of Directors expressed full confidence in Damewood’s ability to lead the College and its Mission of preparing students to professionally provide high quality and compassionate health care services. His career in higher education spans 26 years and includes 17 years of leadership experience at Clarkson College.

“I am humbled to have the honor of following a man of integrity and respect,” said Damewood of his future predecessor. “Clarkson College has been fortunate to have had such a transformational leader as President, and the positive impact he will leave with us is like no other. Thankfully, in his role as President Emeritus, I will have the opportunity to consult his expertise.” For the next several months, Burgher will continue to mentor Damewood with the expectation of a smooth transition next summer.
